The MIEMP laboratory facility for simulation and optimization modeling was created in May 2005 with funding from CAIT, Rutgers University - ACIC program, and the private sector. The laboratory is housed in the state-of-the-art CAIT building on Busch Campus. The scope of the laboratory is the development of advanced quantitative tools and procedures to support the intermodal freight, maritime and port industry at strategic, tactical and operational levels.

The laboratory has established multi-disciplinary, international, synergistic collaborations among individuals and institutions well recognized for their research and educational contributions in the fields of intermodal freight and maritime transportation and logistics.

The laboratory is equipped with two servers housing the databases, statistical analysis, GIS, mathematical modeling, and simulation tools. Several desktops allow for hands-on instruction and concurrent access to the databases and tools by the program’s research team.

The laboratory setup allows for small group instruction and is used to enhance the learning, thinking, and problem solving skills of our students and researchers. Instructional material integrates knowledge and skills in various aspects of transportation and logistics, including intermodal freight, maritime, ports and terminals engineering, planning, management and operations.
