The objective of the undergraduate program here at the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University is to provide the students with a platform that imparts education in civil engineering fundamentals, applications, technicalities involved and design for them to be the graduates for the practice of professional engineering. The first two years of study for undergraduate students build the base needed for the civil and environmental engineering education by taking various courses in math, theoretical and applied mechanics, and some general engineering courses. Also several electives are offered that are both course related and non-course related. While the last two years of study involve primarily civil and environmental engineering courses wherein the student selects a major and secondary area of study from the five areas of concentration within the department. The total credits required for graduation are 132 for class of 2001 and 138 for the class of 2002 and 2003.
Five-Year Dual Degree Program
The five-year programs offer dual degrees in conjunction with various other undergraduate colleges at Rutgers University. A B.A./B.S. program is offered in cooperation with three liberal arts colleges in New Brunswick: Douglass College, Livingston College, and Rutgers College. A special joint program between the College of Engineering and Rutgers Graduate School of Management is available for qualified engineering students. This program offers the opportunity for students to obtain the Master of Business Administration degree within one calender year of completing the baccalaureate degree requirements. in order to be considered for this special joint program, a student must have earned a comulative grade point average of 3.0 or better through the first term of the junior year and must have received a score in the top quartile or better on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). For details see page 386 in the Undergraduate Catalog. For civil engineering students, upto 15 credits of MBA courses may be used as technical/general electives towards the B.S. degree. Exchange Program with the City University of London
An exchange program with the City University of London is available to qualified (normally 3.0 GPA cum.) engineering students. The students normally spedn their junior year in london and earn academic credits of 30-36 credits towards a B.S. degree at Rutgers. Honors Program (James J. Slade Scholar)
In the Junior year, students who have maintained a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average may apply to the chairperson of the department to be admitted into the James J. Slade Scholars Program. A Slade scholar's program requires independent research and a thesis that results in a total number of credits that is 6 credits beyond the minimum required for graduation. The thesis, describing the student's investigations, is presented at a public seminar of the college. With the approval of the student's committee, courses of equivalent stature may be substituted for any four of the required technical courses in the regular program. Upon completion of the honors program, the student receives a special honors certificate. Successful completion of the honors program is also noted in the list of degrees and honors conferred in teh commencement program. Co-op Internship
The internship provides the student with the oportunity to practice and/or apply knowledge and skills in various civil and environmental engineering professional environments. This internship is intended to provide a capstone experience to the student's undergraduate experience by integrating prior course work into a working engineering environment. The experience also motivates the student for further learning. The credits earned are for the educational benefits of the experience. |
